Description of painting:
“Juntas” is a multi-layer screen print inspired by the collections of home photos of Bryan's mom and her sisters—three women, arm-in-arm, full of palpable confidence. The raw coolness and mystique of past family generations shines through old Polaroids. The bold colors and rough textures nod to the gritty energy of the late ‘80s and early ’90s; the era they grew up in. This piece serves as an ode to Latina women: their style, influence, beauty, and the familia bond that holds everything together.
Artist Bio: I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and later moved to Durham to study at North Carolina Central University, where I earned my B.A. in Visual Communications with a focus in Graphic Design. With family roots in Mexico, my work often touches on the modern first generation American-Latino experience. Beyond my personal art practice, I’ve worked as a designer for local nonprofits including the East Durham Co-op and Communities in Partnership; organizations focusing on providing healthy, free produce to Durham families in need, sourced from local Black and Brown farmers
